Comments from the Judges...

Wii Care
"This project probes the possibilities found in the Wii-elderly interaction. The problem statement points out the pertinent issue of the loss of connectivity within in a otherwise hyper-connected society. I enjoyed the thorough exploration and depth in this solution. Very solid presentation, great sketches." - Collin Farill, Big Bang

Shall Wii Dance
"ShallWiiDance takes an activity that is pretty popular with an older audience, and makes it more danceable and age-appropriate than games like Dance Dance Revolution. Plus you can see more that could be done with motion-capture." - Maureen Carroll, Creature LLC

Wii Travel
"The sense of adventure and stimulation this provides should encourage users, while educating them and helping them feel connected. Especially good for those who are restricted to a bed or have limited opportunity to leave the house." - Wesley Barker, Clarity

October Studio Tour & Talk

Formation Design Group with
Russell Kroll on "Reframing Industrial Design"

presented by IDSA Atlanta and Formation Design Group.

Set aside an evening for IDSA Atlanta's first Studio Tour & Talk of the Fall season to be hosted by Formation Design Group. Relax, share, and network with fellow chapter members at Formation's studio in Midtown Atlanta as Russell Kroll presents his talk:

Overextended – Reframing Industrial Design
"Job security, international competition & bankrupt countries… The global business context is changing and experts don’t agree on what to expect.

As a future looking profession Industrial Design must consider its path through the economic carnage of collapsing markets and enhance its relevance. 'Overextended' uses humorous examples from the marketplace to highlight contradictions within the Industrial Design profession. The presentation is both an introspective discussion of recent events and a call to arms for designers effected by the turmoil wrought by rapidly changing market conditions.

Overextended will present a strategy for cementing Industrial Design’s position at the center of the innovation process. Examples will highlight this central role as our past, future and as the core of what Industrial Design provides."

And the winner is...

Results of the "Charrette de 24 Heures"
presented by IDSA Atlanta

[To Go]

IDSA Atlanta would like to thank the people who made this event possible; to the students (28 of whom participated in spite of busy schedules and the holiday weekend) who worked tirelessly, making every minute count, and to our distinguished judges who served with great enthusiasm, many thanks.

So, our judges have reviewed the entries and here are the results:

[24Heures09-first place winner]
1st Place: "The Evolving Pizza Box": On How We Share Food - a morphing packaging solution replacing the need for plates and additional leftover storage containers by Josh Tuminella and Shelton Davis (Georgia Institute of Technology)

Project Blog: www.afbroz.tumblr.com

[24Heures09-second place winner]
2nd Place: "Sushi Tray" - a retail sushi packaging solution that offers compartments for chopsticks and your favorite sushi sauces by Corey Harris (Auburn University)

Project Submission: Sushi Tray layout [JPEG]

[24Heures09-third place winner]

3rd Place: "The Sauce Caddy" - a condiment container solution for the on-the-go diner by Kenneth Payne, Jonathon Stone, Ian Forte, Jason Robertson, and Zach Gray (Auburn University)

Project Submission: Sauce Caddy layout [JPEG]

Comments from the Judges...

"I was impressed by the number of students who put so much time and thought into this 24 hour challenge over a weekend."

"I think the winning entries managed to elegantly solve real problems that everyone can relate to, and I was encouraged to see many other entires that acknowledged the need to rethink the way the take-out system works overall. Great job!"

Carie Davis, Global Design Manager - The Coca-Cola Company

"The pizza box solution is completely do-able within existing product parameters. It recognizes that the pizza box has usage beyond delivery, and allows the user to easily reconfigure the box for its afterlife of storing leftovers – without stealing all the fridge space!"

"The sushi tray and ketchup caddie also do a good job of recognizing user issues that we all have experienced with existing to-go packaging, and then addressing them with simple solutions."

"Though many of the students tried to address the issues of packaging waste, we are still waiting for that break-through solution that will make food packaging truly sustainable!"

Maureen Carroll, Principle - Creature LLC

"Fitting a large pizza box into a small refrigerator is a dilemma that we can all relate to. This concept potentially solves the problem of space management while creating a new product (pizza plates) with the wasted packaging."

"Many grocery stores in our area now carry fresh sushi. The packaging concept thought through some of the key challenges associated with eating sushi on the go."

"Fast food on the go is here to stay. So how do I dip my French fries or onion rings while driving to the job interview? This concept presented a clever way of keeping the dipping sauce near the source."

Paul Spitale, Marketing Manager for Food & Beverage - MeadWestvaco

It's about industrial designers, the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re- invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It's about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world's most influential designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

End-User Research at Steelcase, Inc.

"Maximizing the Patient and Practitioner Environment
in the Healthcare Industry: Steelcase, Inc"

Joyce Bromberg, Director of WorkSpace Futures - Research
Co-sponsored by PDMA Georgia and IDSA Atlanta

Join us on November 12, 2008 at the Atlanta headquarters of Newell Rubbermaid, to learn how Steelcase, Inc. utilizes end-user research to help deliver a better healthcare experience, from the radiology lab to the patient room.

As Director of WorkSpace Futures - Research, Joyce is responsible for user-center research for vertical markets and Phase 0 research for product development. Sometimes called “pioneering research,” this activity utilizes her 25 years of industry experience in the areas of observation, synthesis and design.

Leveraging a number of case studies from the healthcare industry, Joyce will illustrate and discuss the tools that the Steelcase WorkSpace Futures and Nuture teams have used to provide meaningful improvements within a highly stressed and emotional environment. Looking beyond traditional physical ergonomics, their team emphasizes cognitive ergonomics - the connection of learning, memory, and physical space.

Ms. Bromberg’s presentation will be divided into two parts, the first will give an in depth overview of Steelcase’s Human Centered Design Research Process. It will focus on how Steelcase uses the insights gained through this method to develop new product and setting solutions and explain how they are beginning to measure the effectiveness of both. The second will allow the attendees to have a hands on observational experience that allows them to develop design principles and product concepts. Attendees will come away from the experience with some new tools to add to their repertoire.

Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Time: 6:00-8:30pm ET
Where: Newell Rubbermaid
3 Glenlake Parkway NE, Atlanta, GA 30328 [map].
